New York Website Development Firm Warns of the Dangers of Transferring a Domain Name between Registrars

Leading Manhattan website design expert says that there is at least one pitfall when changing domain name registrars, but says it is an issue that is easily solved.

However, if you have an aged domain, transferring the registration can have an impact on search engine rank.

“The act of switching a domain’s registrar does not automatically mean that a website will lose its coveted domain age,” Crisafi explains, “but there is a catch.”

Some registrars will apply their default nameserver settings as soon as a domain is transferred to them. If this happens, the website will lose its age because the domain creation date would be reset.

“Domain age offers significant search engine optimization benefits with Google and other major search engines,” says Crisafi. “This is why businesses need to retain their domain age when they transfer to a new registrar.”

The best way to retain the age is to be sure that the new registrar immediately uses the same name server (DNS) settings that have been used with the existing registrar. If the website is using the existing registrar’s DNS settings, then the DNS settings should be changed to that of an independent third party before making the move.

“If these instructions are followed, transferring a domain registration will have no effect on a site’s search engine optimization,” says Cirsafi.
