There are a number of easy, but useful ways to get the most of from your SEO campaign. There are five simple tweaks that a website owner can make to improve SEO efficiency and they are almost as useful as most of your larger, overall strategies.

While their competitors are obsessed with the bigger search engine optimization (SEO) picture, small business owners can benefit from making the following simple improvements:

1. Images should be part of an SEO strategy.

Make sure that all of the images you use will benefit your overall SEO strategy. For example, if you choose to upload copyright-free shared pictures, make sure to change the filename, title and alternate text so that they will reflect your targeted keywords.

By doing so, major search engines will recognize the photo as relevant to specific searches and it will help rank the photo in Google’s image search.

2. Permalinks should feature as few words as possible.

URLs should be condensed and their keyword density should be increased.

This will give you an edge over competitors. Your URL will be properly optimized and also easy to remember

3. Businesses need a Google+ page.

Facebook fan pages are an excellent way to boost online marketing efforts. However, if a business wants to gain a real edge, they need to create a Google+ page.

Not only is this Google’s own social media platform, giving it an advantage over others, it is also relatively new, offering business owners an opportunity to get in the door early.

4. Businesses need a YouTube Channel.

Videos can be beneficial to an SEO campaign, but when a business creates a YouTube channel, it can showcase its favorite videos and add links back to its website.

This makes it more attractive to Google and other social media websites.

5. Affiliate links should be tested.

For websites that feature affiliate links, it should be verified that they are “no-follow” links which, essentially, alert Google to the fact that they should not be counted when the search engine assesses the site.

This will keep your SEO efforts focused and will ultimately push your site further up the ladder.

As a small business owner, you have heard the popular refrain, “A great looking website means nothing if no one visits it.”

So how do you get found online?

There are a number of ways to ensure that your website meets its ultimate goal and most have everything to do with search engine optimization (SEO).  SEO is the required foundation of a successful website marketing strategy. The thing is that it takes hard work and consistency if you want your website to appear on the first page of the search engine results pages (SERPs).

The following tips should help you increase your small business website’s organic search engine rankings:

  1. 1. Garner inbound links: Building inbound links to your existing website is all about getting other quality websites to link back to you. These links help a business website to create authority or “link juice.” In Google’s eyes, the more inbound links you have, the more important your website is and the higher it will rank.
  2. 2. Practice good on-page SEO: On-page SEO refers to placing your most important keywords within the content of your website pages. This includes using keywords in your headlines, sub-headlines, textual content, image tags, webpage links and more.
  3. 3. Create an XML Sitemap: XML sitemaps help search engines sift through the content of your website pages more efficiently. Creating an XML sitemap is easy, yet it is a website component that is commonly overlooked by most website owners.
  4. 4. Use 301 redirects: When you redesign your website or specific pages and change page names, or if you change your website’s domain, you need to use 301 redirects. These will redirect the old pages to the new ones. 301 redirects are important for good SEO because they direct the search engines to the new page and maintain your previous SEO work.

With the New Year right around the corner, small business owners need to reflect on the past year and come up with some fresh resolutions to help boost business during the next. The best way to get the most from your website in 2012 is by implementing some proven strategies for better results.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is clearly the key to online success but spending a ton of money in online ads isn’t always the way to go. In fact, even some of the more traditional SEO techniques have been replaced through the rise of social media.

In the coming year, business owners need to truly engage their audience if they want to score valuable points with the major search engines.

When you couple social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and blogs, with more conventional SEO strategies like keyword research, you can really dominate the marketplace.

When you employ a strategy that encompasses at least some of these social networking tools and combine it with your overall online marketing plan, you will see results, but only if you make a serious commitment.

For example, if you feature a blog, using keywords that you know people use when searching for your business, you need to publish on a weekly basis if you want to increase your chance of appearing on the first page of Google. Next, you need to take it a step further by linking your blog posts to and from your Facebook page, Twitter account and LinkedIn profile.

Business website owners also need to think about mobile communications as well.

Having a mobile friendly website that displays quickly and easily is no longer an option, but a must.
