Holiday Web Marketing Tips for Businesses

Web presence during the holiday season can be just as important for brick and mortar Holiday Website Marketingbusinesses as well as those whose only presence is online. There are many things that traditional businesses can do on their web sites to impact holiday sales.   Here are some ideas on how to use your website to promote and enhance the holiday season.

Use your website to advertise sales and promotions.  Everyone loves gift ideas and good deals.  Target holiday shoppers by letting them know about your new products and sale promotions.  Getting these in front of potential customers via the web can help motivate them and get them into your storefront.  From newsletters to ads, now is the time to incentivize buyers with a reason to shop with you as well as to choose your products and services over others.

Post online store and product reviews.  Posting online reviews of both products and your business is a good way for customers and potential customers to get information about you and the goods and services you sell.  You can incorporate this into your website by simply posting client feedback, adding product reviews and business testimonials on home and product pages. You can also post any awards or endorsements from professional organizations that your business has garnered.  Encourage satisfied visitors to ‘like you’ or a product on Facebook or pin one of your products on Pinterest.

Make doing business with you easy by listing store policies and services. Make sure that all information such as shipping charges, services, return policies, and guarantees are easily found.  Doing so will help current and potential customers feel more comfortable about doing business with your company.  Answering all your customers’ questions up front — often translates to more sales.

Be sure to post store hours and directions.  Post store hours and highlight holiday hours to facilitate customers’ busy seasonal schedules. Make your business easy to find with clear address and directions available on your site.  Include a Google map or other way to find directions easily.  Because many people will probably be using mobile phones and other devices, make sure this information is accessible on mobile devices.  You want to make it convenient for them to find and visit you.

Beware of Fake Facebook Privacy Policy

For the second time in the last few months – a fake Facebook privacy notice has been virally spreading on the social media site itself.  The  fake ‘privacy notice’ that’s been virally spreading on Facebook, supposedly protecting one’s personal details and data from unauthorized copying, started spreading a few days after Facebook posted its new privacy guidelines, announcing it would let users comment on proposed changes to its governing documents, but not vote.

The text of the fake notice is as follows:

In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, graphics, comics, paintings, photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!

(Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook
Wall. This will place them under protection of copyright laws. By the present communiqué, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents. The aforementioned prohibited actions also apply to employees, students, agents and/or any staff under Facebook’s direction or control. The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of my privacy is punished by law (UCC 1 1-308-308 1-103 and the Rome Statute).

Facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos as well as the information contained in your profile status updates…

The notice resembles a similar text from this past July which also spread virally on Facebook and, just like that notice, the new one is untrue.

The facts are that Facebook and its users are still bound to the same terms and conditions that are accepted by users when they sign up for the service, and posting a legal “talisman” of this kind on your profile does nothing to change that.

Social Bookmarking & Your Web Marketing Plan

If you are familiar withinternet marketing you will already know that getting back links is one of the most important aspects of a successful SEO campaign. Links have a great amount of influence on traffic to your website and can be important to your business’ success. These days with the increased importance of social media, it is important to add one more component to your link building and marketing efforts. This component is social bookmarking –  another way to increase links.

With social bookmarking you are creating bookmarks for web pages that users want to remember or share with other users.  These bookmarks are stored as links to the web pages in question and then saved on social networking sites. Depending on how the user saves the links, the links can be viewed by the public or shared only with a specific or targeted group of people. The links are added to the social networking site by including keyword tags, titles or URLs to the web pages.

The immediate benefit of social bookmarking your site is that you create a link pointing to your site. A lot of the social bookmarking websites have high authority, which means those websites are trusted by lots of people. The link from those sites is a big asset in increasing your SEO ranking.

Another obvious benefit of social bookmarking is that it can help you draw more visitors to your site. Assuming your site has interesting content, you can easily draw more traffic this way.  In fact, sometimes when somebody book marks a web site, what occasionally happens is a number of people suddenly rush to that particular website causing a surge or overload to the targeted site.

Unlike other forms of web link building, social bookmarks gain value with time and should therefore be included in as many social bookmarking sites as possible. Links that have been included in social networking sites tend to accumulate more tags over a longer period and therefore traffic to these particular sites increases as time passes. This is therefore a long term internet marketing tool.

The best way to take advantage of this internet marketing tool is to seek a professional in this area. Professional web marketing providers will know the most popular social bookmarking sites and will do the submission of bookmarks to the web sites on your behalf.  Combining social bookmarking with other web linking strategies will enhance the success of your website.

RSS Feeds & their Benefits

RSS icons, the orange, square-shaped icons on websites are a familiar symbol to many who have websites and use the internet.  RSS is the term used to describe the group of web based feed formats that are used to publish more frequently updated content.

The most common types of RSS Feeds are information or news feeds from a major news website or a blog feed. These are particularly useful since they are regularly updated. Other types of RSS Feeds include Schedule Feeds (which can include schools and other organizations that offer valuable communication like meeting times, events and other information), Forum Feeds (usually alert readers when someone has answered one of their postings or when a subject of relevance is covered) and Discount and Specials Feeds (sometimes offered by retail and online stores to announce the latest sales and discounts.)

RSS Feeds are good for generating more web traffic and increasing search engine rankings. An article feed is good for alerting readers when new articles and other content of interest to a readership are available. The feed is typically a summary or introduction from which readers can read further if desired. The RSS feed is one way to have a constant update to your website with fresh content, so that it will be viewed more often. This, in turn, can cause much higher search engine rankings for your targeted and relevant key phrases. Whenever a search engine directs visitors to your website, it will also record the RSS feed updates. As an added bonus, the search engine may then count the RSS feed as fresh and most probably unique, targeted content.

With an RSS feed, it is also possible to further enhance the amount of unique visitors that come to your website by syndicating the updates. This technique can net several back-links on other websites and result in an increase to your site’s overall off-page search engine optimization score.  It can also help increase the number of unique visitors through the direct links from other websites and blogs.

RSS are easy to maintain.  Once it is set up the RSS feed enables updates to occur without having to actually update it yourself is a plus. For the user, RSS feeds can be opted in and out of easily to control the information flow on a website.

Those who have a website and don’t offer RSS Feeds are missing out on a convenient, time-saving tool for visitors.  And those using the web should consider subscribing to them as well so as not to miss out on new information and offers.

Choosing a Domain Name for Your Business Website

Choosing the domain name for your website is an important part of developing your on line presence. The unique URL or address of a particular website is a critical part of how you are found on line. No matter what type of site you want to build whether it is a blog or an e-commerce website, there are several things you should consider when going through the process of picking the right domain name.

A domain name should be memorable but not too generic.  The right domain name will keep it as close to your website’s name as possible or identify you with a particular topic or product.  You do not want to confuse visitors because your domain name seems to be totally different from your website name or products you sell. Research keywords and think about what your visitors and customers will like and identify with. For example, if the name of your company is Julie’s Beauty Supply, you may want to consider domain names such as “Julie’s Beauty Supply.com “ or “Hair & Make-Up Products.com” that target what you sell. Both domain names provide an avenue for visitors from your target markets. Remember that you can own multiple domain names, all of which can point to a single domain. For example, you could register “Hair & Make-Up Products.com “, and “Julie’s Beauty Products.com” and have these names point to “Julie’s Beauty Supply.com.”

Search engines often reward domain names with descriptive keywords in them.  This means for example if someone searches for, say, “designer hair clips”, the website “Designer Hair Clips. com”  has a better chance of coming up in the search results than another company that sells designer hair clips but is located at “dhc.com.”  The search engines assume that a domain name with a keyword in it is highly targeted towards that key phrase, and thus should rank higher.

Keep your domain name short as possible. In most cases, the shorter your domain name is, the better off you will be.  Keeping it short will allow people to easily recall the URL and they will continue to visit your site in the future.  Also try to avoid using dashes, hyphens or other symbols as they may be confusing to potential visitors and those looking for your specific domain name.

When you start to register your domain name it would be wise to have a few different names as back up in-case your first choice is already taken.  As with the example above – if “beauty supply.com” is taken.  You might want to consider the “UltimateBeautySupply.com.”

Domain names do not cost much.  But careful consideration should be taken when choosing one that is best for your site and business.

Understanding Local Search

Local search of search engines can be very helpful to many businesses.  Studies have shown that a significant percentage of search engine queries are local searches that involve adding a geographic term, such as a town, city or zip code to a search engine search. By conducting a local search internet users can reduce the number of results that are brought up by an individual query.  This makes it easier to bring up more meaningful search results because only those businesses that are related to the search appear in the results. If you search “hardware stores” and “Brooklyn, New York” the search engine will bring up only hardware stores that are located in Brooklyn.   Results in local searches are even shown clustered on a map so the user can easily see which ones are located closest to them.

The map feature of a local search is important because people prefer to use the services of businesses that are near to them. Many people consider the location of the business before they ever read the ads or other provided information. With the local search feature this process is made simpler for the Internet user. The fact Google is showing more local results without someone entering a town in a search query only serves to drive that local SEO cannot be ignored.

For a local business of any size, local SEO starts with keyword research and identifying the terms your customers use to find you, including any geographical terms – these keywords can include “New York City hardware stores”.

Despite the increasing use of the local search function, many businesses are failing to use this feature to its fullest. In order to help your customers find you, you need to help them find you when they perform a Local Search. So, the first step you need to take is to perform a search of your business online with various search engines so you can find out whether or not your business actually turns up. If not, you need to take some steps to change this fact. If you don’t take steps to make a change, you may be missing out on hundreds of potential customers.
