We can all breathe a sigh of relief.

In a recent video for the company’s Webmaster Help channel, Google’s principal engineer, Matt Cutts, said that the concept of search engine optimization (SEO) as spam is wrong.

Cutts, who was responding to a user question, said that white hat SEO tactics are an ideal way to ensure a search engine like Google can locate, index and highlight quality content designed to suit users. He went on to say that carefully planned and highly editorial content marketing can help businesses gain search visibility.

In the video, he points out that some people use black hat SEO to try and trick the system. However, these corrupt tactics, which include keyword stuffing and hacking, will result in poor search rankings.

To bring the most SEO benefits to a website, Cutts advises marketers to consider every element of their websites. He says that URLs should be clear and easily read by search engine spiders and websites should load quickly and exist without any broken links or missing elements. Ultimately, content, according to Cutts, is the most important part of any website and he reminds website owners that articles should be written for both the visitor and the search engine.

“There’s plenty, an enormous amount, of white hat, great quality stuff that you can do as a search engine optimizer,” Cutts said. “You can do things like making sure your pages are crawlable and accessible so that people can find them just by clicking on links.”

Keyword strategy can also falter, he notes, if not properly implemented. According to Cutts, prospects are unlikely to use industry jargon in their searches, so strategies should be developed around more common speech than highly technical language.

It is crucial, in today's highly competitive marketplace, that your website makes a great first impression on visitors. As a small business owner, you know that if your website doesn't cut it, your potential customers will move on.

Creating the right first impression should be a top priority for any business owner. In order to do that, your website needs to be professional and presentable.

The fact is, your website and your online presence must be treated like your brick and mortar storefront. The website should make potential visitors feel that you are trustworthy, which in turn will spur them to buy your products or services.

There are a few basic elements of a good website.

First of all, the website design should be attractive, compelling and offer a strong call to action. In other words, the user needs to understand exactly what it is that you want him to do.

One of the most overlooked aspects of a successful website is your company logo, so make sure it is well designed.

If your website features products, make sure that you have a relevant photo gallery. Product photos increase the desirability of your site and should be incorporated into your design.

However, readability of your website's content is the most important part of your online presence. So it is imperative that your content is easy to read by dividing the content into proper paragraphs and lists.

The best strategy is to use no more than two different fonts and headings on your site. Also, be sure that the spelling and grammar of your content is correct.

The bottom line is that a well-designed website with relevant content is an absolute must and a poorly designed website will quickly turn visitors off and force them to search elsewhere for the information they need.
