Yahoo is Going Local

Yahoo! is trying to compete with Google's hyper local search features with its new 'Local Offers' feature.

'Local Offers' is a program in which Yahoo! is partnering with leading online and offline providers to build one of the largest and most comprehensive repositories of local deals on the Internet. According to statements made by the company, 'Local Offers' will make it easy for millions of consumers to find, right on Yahoo!, the best local deals and savings in their area.

We in the industry believe that this is Yahoo! Inc.'s attempt to compete with 'Google Places,' but with a twist. Yahoo! is launching the program with more than a dozen partners providing a wide selection of local deals, coupons and other offers from spas, restaurants and other retailers in a user's local area.

'The local landscape is exploding with new sources of content and advertising, and consumers want these experiences personalized just for them,' a Yahoo! representative recently said in a statement. 'Yahoo! is taking the complexity out of finding the great local deals that are most relevant to their interests and needs.'

This is good news for small businesses that want to market their products or services online.

With more than 180 million unique visitors to Yahoo!'s sites in the United States alone, the company is uniquely positioned to deliver local-offer partners the massive scale and targeting needed to reach engaged audiences, grow their businesses, and drive foot traffic to local merchants.

Malicious Websites Were on the Rise in 2010

A recent study has revealed that better tactics and black hat SEO laid the foundation for a dramatic increase in the number of malicious websites found in 2010. In fact, he says that the report found a 111% percent increase in malicious websites between 2009 and 2010.

The bad guys continuously improve the way they work and they are using black hat SEO to attack Internet users. According to the study, web users searching for breaking news had a two percent chance of being lured to a malicious website, even more than those searching for adult content.

According to the report, the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, Corey Haim's death, and World Cup Soccer were just a few examples of manipulated search engine results steering Internet users to bogus links that rated higher than legitimate results.

Many of the 2010 SEO attacks were blended in nature, the report said, with a component that consisted of Rogue AV. Both approaches used bogus AV campaigns offering free PC scans that identified fake infections. Upon notification of a fake virus, users were prompted to download free 'antivirus' software, where a second scan asked them for their credit card information to remove the fake malware.

Researchers say that they expect to see increased black hat SEO techniques, combined with rogue antivirus and e-mail containing data-stealing components in the coming months.

What Small Business Websites Need to Achieve Success

The Internet is full of many horrible websites. Most of these sites aren't just designed poorly, there are many other elements that go into making a website customer-friendly and many companies just don't get it.

The first essential element of a small business website is a clear description of the business and what it does, coupled with a clear and simple website address.

A domain name is like the company's brand name. It should be made easy for users to type it into a browser or an e-mail address.

On the topic of simplicity, it is important that all small business websites make their contact information easy for visitors to find and suggests keeping website navigation as simple as possible.

A wesbite's navigation should be clearly laid out. Dropdown navigation is best because it allows the visitor to see the content under every heading from virtually any page. This will make it easy for visitors to find what they are looking for.

With respect to helping customers find what it is that they are looking for, small business websites must also be able to provide that information and this can be best done through offering fresh content, updated on a regular basis.

Fresh content is the key to keeping a business's targeted traffic interested, but first, a business needs to drive traffic to its site. That is why business owners should always know the basics of search engine optimization.

That means using the correct keywords throughout the website's text, putting in plenty of links, and naming page titles and URLs correctly.

Press Releases Can Benefit a Business

Small businesses can benefit from regularly creating press releases and distributing them online.

An increasing number of small businesses now use press releases as part of their search engine optimization campaigns and there is a good reason for that. Press releases are the perfect way for small businesses to attract attention and interest from targeted users.

Small business success depends on getting that business noticed. Because the market is so competitive, any exposure can be highly beneficial, but press releases add a certain element of authority that other marketing techniques cannot offer.

If distributed effectively, a small business press release will get noticed and help in developing that business's brand identity. In addition, a well-written press release will display authority on the part of the business, which in turn tells users that the business is professional and trustworthy.

A good press release will certainly garner some interest in the company that it represents, as long as it contents useful, fresh and relevant information. In addition to interest from users, however, it also helps drive traffic through permanent backlinks.

Increasing the amount of targeted traffic is a must for small businesses. Once the user shows enough interest in the company and what it has to say, he or she will likely click through to its website to learn more.

A press release, no matter how well written, is worthless, unless the business website itself can keep the interest of visitors.

Just like a press release, a small business website must offer fresh, relevant content that is updated regularly. If a business cannot capture the interest of those that visit its website, it has little chance for success.

How to Choose the Right Development Company

There are lots of web development agencies to choose from, but narrowing the field to just a few will help ensure a smooth process for small businesses venturing into the online world.

When choosing a development and design company, small businesses should first investigate the track record of firms that they are considering. It is important to check the portfolio of the web design agencies, as well as testimonials, and verify that they are legitimate.

The company's availability should play a big role too

Small businesses should always find out what employee will be managing their company account and make sure the company has a telephone number, not just an email address for contact. Business owners should also verify the turnaround time for responding to emails and other requests, as well as request a strict timeline for any projects.

Any web development agency that a small business hires to create its online presence should, ideally, be big enough to ensure that if the account manager is off sick or on vacation; the project is not put on hold.

Furthermore, having a large staff with varying talents is also a plus, because it offers a versatility that is necessary for the creation of an online presence. At dzine it, for example, we have developers, designers, SEO experts and copy writers all under one roof.

Of course, small business owners should get to know potential candidates prior to entering into an agreement to ensure that they are professional and easy to deal with. I also suggest hiring a company that does not outsource.

Business owners should not be afraid to ask to meet with the company's the design and development team. There are many cases of companies who have an in-house management team, and an outsourced development team. The problem with this scenario is the quality of the work can suffer. At dzine it, we always recommend against hiring a firm that outsources its work.

Defining Factors and Tactics of Video SEO

Although search engines cannot completely crawl online video, it is still an important aspect of Internet marketing. There is little to no competition when it comes to video marketing and online video that does exist is mediocre and sub-standard at best.

That’s the one sure sign that very few businesses are bothering with SEO for videos. However, this trend will soon reverse

Believe it or not, there are some sure-fire ways to optimize online videos for the purpose of Internet marketing. One of the most essential elements of SEO for video is the video’s title.

A video’s title is the one quickest way to direct people and search engines to what might be inside the video.

In addition to a video’s title being optimized for search engine marketing, the video’s description is important as well. A video’s description allows the business to add more information that can help the indexing and categorization of the video.

Of course, a business should work hard to get its videos noticed initially because the amount of views a video gets, as well as its ratings and comments can also play a role in SEO.

With all of this in mind, there are a number of tactics that should be employed when optimizing video for search engine placement. Two of the most common techniques include the use of video sitemaps and transcriptions.

Instead of adding links to a video, businesses should embed the videos on a separate page on the site, targeting the search engine’s attention to where the video is embedded, and not where it is hosted. Adding a transcription provides relevant content that can be crawled.

All in all, SEO for video has the potential to work to a business’s advantage. SEO for video can have lots of benefits both for the business and its users.
