Web Hosting Options for Growing Businesses

The changes that a growing business faces can be difficult to manage. Whether a business is expanding operations or venturing down new avenues, such changes can often lead small business owners into situations where they suddenly have a rush of business, but no clear plan to handle that rush.

Planning the structure of a company's website and hosting package in advance of these changes can often help business owners to better cope.

For most business owners, a top priority is keeping efficiency up while keeping costs low. The best option is to select a shared hosting package with a reputable service provider.

Businesses should do an online search for various host providers, read customer reviews and investigate the types of products they have to offer.

Businesses should never select a free hosting package. Often such packages have limited customer service and support and do not allow customers to upgrade when needed.

A good hosting provider should have entry-level packages, as well as more advanced packages that a business can migrate to when necessary.

One of the most important aspects of a hosting package is customer support. A quick phone call to the support desk will quickly show how knowledgeable the support staff actually is. Start by asking them about the packages they offer.

One of the factors that should determine what type of hosting package a business chooses is the amount of data or bandwidth that the business requires. Starting out, the website will probably be quite small, unless the business is going straight to an ecommerce, platform.

Of course, businesses can always choose an all-in-one website design and development firm that offers its own hosting services. Chances are if the customer service is top-notch, its hosting support will follow suit.

Facebook Was the Most Popular Website of 2010

A recent report shows that social networking giant, Facebook, became the most searched for and most visited website of 2010 and suggests that businesses play close attention to this fact in 2011.

First Time magazine named Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg "Person of the Year," and now, Zuckerberg's website has apparently become the online equivalent according to a report from Experian Hitwise. Experian, a leading global information services company that provides data and analytical tools to clients in more than 65 countries, made the announcement in a recent news release.

This is the second year that the social networking website has been the top search term overall, accounting for 2.11 percent of all searches. In addition, the study found that four variations of the term 'Facebook' were among the top 10 search terms of 2011 and accounted for 3.48 percent of searches overall.

For the first time in its history, Facebook was the top-visited website in 2010, accounting for 8.93 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November, 2010. Google was the second most visited website, with 7.19 percent of visits, followed by Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo!, and YouTube, respectively.

This is great news for Facebook, particularly because there is an expectation that everyone would know the correct url address by now.

One can infer that there is still a strong interest in Facebook among those that have never used the site. Whether that is the case or folks are just lazy, the bottom line is that Facebook's growing popularity is something that businesses should pay close attention to.

Businesses that are not taking advantage of all that Facebook has to offer, should do so right away.

Cooking Up the Right SEO Recipe

Unless they have proper training or a good understanding of the subject, it is often difficult for people to get a good grasp of what search engine optimization is all about. When most people start an SEO campaign for the first time, they tend to go all out, using every technique they can find. Unfortunately, this makes a website look ‘overdone’ in terms of SEO and such guerilla tactics usually result in low rankings.

Creating a search engine optimization campaign can be a lot like cooking. When inexperienced cooks first start to create a dish, they tend to use too much or too little of certain ingredients or have a hard time following a recipe, if they follow it at all.

In cooking, recipes are very specific about how much of each ingredient should be used. One false move can ruin an entire dish. The same goes for an SEO campaign.

There are many people out there that think when optimizing a website, that adding everything they can is the way to go. The result of this sort of haphazard SEO can be disastrous.

Anyone that wants to cook like the search engine optimization experts needs to follow a professional’s recipe. A poorly balanced dish will just taste bad, but an over-optimized website can actually get a business into big trouble with major search engines like Google, who look for signs of SEO manipulation.

When Planning a Web Development Project, Budget Should Be the First Consideration

One of the most difficult things to do, when embarking on a website development project, is to determine price. What goes into a website development project will determine its price and that is particularly true of its design elements.

Websites can be built in a day or over the course of months and small business owners can put lots of thought into a project or something can be put up to suit one particular need. When embarking on a website design and development project, business owners should think of the project as if it were the construction of a house of the creation of a work of art.

From the perspective of building a house, consideration must be given to how big it will be, how much detail will go into it, what type of features will be includes and where it will be located. This same thought process, he says, should be applied to building a web presence.

By putting this into perspective, a business owners can determine exactly how much to spend on their website and budget appropriately. Although everyone may want a mansion, the truth is that we cannot all afford one. The job of a website designer is to come as closely to your vision as possible, within the budget that the client provides.

In this line of work we believe that a business owner should spare nothing when it comes to something as important as the creation of a web presence.

As a website developer, I want my clients to have more square footage, the best floors, the highest quality paints, fixtures and molding. 'Since I am the designer, my client's new look will reflect on me.

Regardless of how much a business spends, it is the job of the design and development team to stay within the tools and budget that they have been given.
