New York SEO Expert Explains How Domain Name Redirects Can Affect Search Engine Ranking

Leading Manhattan SEO services and online marketing firm says there are proven ways to point multiple domain names to one specific location without hurting a company’s search engine ranking.

According to Peter Crisafi, Vice President of dzine it, Inc., a leading New York website development firm that offers search engine optimization (SEO) services to clients throughout the United States, having a keyword-rich domain name can boost a website’s search engine ranking, but there are more important factors to consider when owning multiple domain names.

“Let’s say that a company wants to boost its search engine ranking and decides to purchase three additional domains based on targeted keywords,” says Crisafi. “From the perspective of search engine optimization, there is both a right way and a wrong way to assign these additional domain names to the company’s existing website.”

Crisafi says that, if not handled properly, this move can cause problems in terms of organic search engine optimization through duplicate content and other issues. Common methods that webmasters and SEO experts use to point multiple domain names to a single web server, according to Crisafi, include domain mirroring/masking, domain cloaking, or domain redirecting.

“Domain mirroring or masking is just one tool that webmasters will employ in the case of multiple domains,” says Crisafi. “With mirroring, any alternate website will look and feel as if it is the root website, when it is actually a mask overlaying the original domain name and its content into the alternate site.”

Domain cloaking, on the other hand, uses an iframe or embedded frameset to display the content of another website, but it is domain redirecting (also called URL redirecting), according to Crisafi, that is the most popular method.

“Domain redirecting sends all traffic through the new domain name to the main website,” says Crisafi. “However, it needs to be done properly.”

According to Crisafi, the proper way to redirect a domain name so that search engines don‘t get confused is to use what is called a 301 redirect and he says that website owners should always consult an SEO expert when considering a marketing or technical decision regarding their website.

“When additional domain names are acquired, they should be permanently redirected to the main domain name, which should be the central location for all of the business’s content,” says Crisafi. “Redirection should be handled differently depending on the type of server hosting the site and the purpose of the redirected domain name.”
